How to calculate VAT

  • Add VAT: total = net × (1 + rate ÷ 100). At 20 %, £100 net is £120 gross.
  • Remove VAT: net = total ÷ (1 + rate ÷ 100). From £120 at 20 % you get £100, not £96: taking 20 % off the total is the most common mistake.
  • The VAT is the difference between the total and the net amount, so the three figures always add up to the penny.

Frequently asked questions

How do I add 20 % VAT to a price?

Multiply the net price by 1.2. For example, £250 net becomes £300 with VAT, of which £50 is VAT.

How do I remove VAT from a total?

Divide the total by 1 plus the rate: at 20 %, divide by 1.2. £150 including VAT is £125 net and £25 VAT.

What are the UK VAT rates?

The standard rate is 20 %, the reduced rate 5 % (for example, home energy) and 0 % for items such as most food and children’s clothes. Check HMRC guidance for your specific goods or services.
